We bought this for my son who is expecting his first child shortly. Excellent quality and very easy to use. Would recommend to anyone.
Samsung U10 August 26, 2010 Kooza (UK) This is a great little gadget at this price. Takes a bit of practice to develop a smooth and steady camera style but is so compact its ideal to pack on all sorts of trips and occasions. Full HD too!
Good but very similar to it's rivals October 22, 2009 M. D. Harris (Leicester, UK) 46 out of 48 found this review helpful
Since the Flip arrived there's been a bit of a glut of compact hi-def video cameras hitting the market. I've been lucky enough to sample a couple of these cameras (by Sony and Kodak) and having tried this Samsung I'd have to say they're all pretty close in ability with only the gimmicks (the Sony's rotating lens and Kodak with it's weather proofing) separating them.
Samsung throws slow motion video into the mix, but the fact that it's low-def limits it's appeal. It is however very light and compact. Video quality is ok and comparable to the others (and again low light video quality is pretty ho-hum). The still camera boasts 10 megapixels but is no match for a decent quality dedicated still digital camera. Other limitations are digital zoom (which is also a handicap with all it's direct rivals) and does not work when set to 1080p. Setting it to 720p allows the zoom to activate and doesn't seem to affect video quality too much.
One last thing worth noting is the touch sensitive buttons, which are a bit to easy to press by accident as they to lack any tactile feedback. Aside from that the Samsung U10 is a decent addition to the ultra-compact video camera market.
NB. This camera comes with no memory card or internal memory - so you'll need to buy an SD card to use it.

Samsung U10 High Definition Camcorder
The size and weight of this new HD camcorder along with its ease-of-use is where this new camcorder really wins out. It is a miniscule 56mm (2.2in) x 103mm (4in) x 15.5mm (0.6in) and weighs just 95g (with battery). It fits into your pocket or bag very easily, without realising it is there - this makes it very portable. You are much more likely to have this on you at all times than a "normal" sized camcorder and therefore less likely to miss out on important shots and video.
With your actual camcorder unit you also get in your box a wrist strap, AC power adapter, Component/AV cable, USB cable, Quick start guide, User manual (on CD) and a Tripod Gender.
The 2inch LCD Screen is quite nice and bright. I found the controls (below the screen) a little awkward to use. They are just "touch sensitive" - or I should say often they are NOT touch sensitive. Often you find yourself pressing them 2 or 3 times before anything happens.
The battery status and number of photos/camcorder video time is displayed on-screen (each depends on the settings you have chosen of course and the size of memory card you have installed)
The camcorder has 4 steps of Video resolution from 480/60p up to 1920 x 1080p (Full HD resolution). It also allows "Fine" or "Superfine" Quality. For a 16GB card, you can record about 2 hours of footage on the very best quality setting or around 12 hours on the lowest quality setting. On the maximum resolution and quality it has an acceptable quality of video - much superior to all the phone video clips I have seen but (unsurprisingly) somewhat short of your average sized camcorder.
It does not cope that well in poor light, though is fine outdoors.
On the stills camera side of things Photo shots (stills) can be taken at 10 mega pixels. Photo Resolution is in 6 steps from 2048 x 1152 (2 megapixels) to 3648 x 2736 (10 megapixels). However even at maximum resolution I have not been that impressed with the results. On a full-sized pc monitor they are still quite grainy. You take them at 4:3 or 16:9 ratio. With the camcorder set at the maximum resolution you can still take over 6,000 photos with a 16GB card!
You can zoom in and out via the T and W buttons.
The iScene modes allow Automatic, Sport (which reduces blurring) or Beach/Show (which prevents underexposure). There is also a "Backlight" on facility to ensure your main subject is not underexposed when its background is bright.
There are also a number of digital effects: B&W, Sepia, Negative or "Art".
The Time Lapse setting allows you to take pictures after a set period from 1, 10 or 30 seconds for a total of 24, 48 or 72 hours - this is great for time lapse photography - looking at the sky or a flower over time.
You can view your videos or photos on the LCD screen on the back panel or via your pc or TV (cables are supplied for these options). You can delete, share, protect your pics/videos or create a slideshow in-camera.
Attaching the unit to your pc via a standard USB cable is simplicity itself and uploading your masterpiece videos to YouTube or Flickr could not be simpler - as it has its own dedicated button (bottom right).
The intelli-studio software which comes with the camcorder allows manipulation of photos and video reasonably painlessly (although there are better applications on the market - it isn't bad for "free").
Sound comes from an internal microphone on the front of the unit and also a built-in speaker on the back of it for the use of the user.
The tripod gender predictably allows you to attach the unit to a tripod(!)
You can use a SD or SDHC memory cards. Note that none come free with the camcorder so you will need to buy one before you get going. I bought a 16GB one for £20 so they aren't too expensive at the moment.
You can record in time-lapse motion which records in short intervals.
You can also record in H.264 format allowing you to easily send your video by email to share videos with your friends and family.
It has an in-built rechargeable battery, which can be recharged via the USB cable through the pc or via its own ac adapter (it takes 3 hours to recharge fully via mains or 6 hours via USB). Once fully recharged the video will enable recording for 90 minutes or playback for 120 minutes.
You get a very simple 16 page "quick start guide" which is mainly in pictures (therefore allowing it to be "multilingual" but it really is VERY basic. The proper User Manual on the CD is a much more usable 98-page affair and really quite good. Such a shame they don't produce this on paper as standard so you can browse it at leisure whilst out "in the field".
In summary, what do I like about this camcorder? It is incredibly light and really easy to use. The quality of the video or photos is better than mobile phones BUT on the downside the quality is not brilliant and the touch sensitive pads are not wonderful. If you want a reasonable quality camcorder/camera which you can travel with EVERYWHERE, and you have around £100 to spend then this is one you should probably consider along with other rivals on the market. Either way I hope you Have fun!
Everything you want from a little camcorder and more October 17, 2009 vh1967 (UK) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is really tiny and good looking. The first thing I noticed on unpacking it and setting it up was there was NO MEMORY CARD INCLUDED (I am writing this in bold as if you have not got either up to 2GB SD card or up to 32GB SDHC card at home you are going to be really disappointed when this arrives. So buy the memory card if you have not got one at the same time!
OK, that is my rant out of the way.
This not only is a camcorder it is a camera, and not only a camcorder, but a timelapse photography camcorder. If like me you are itching to get one of those cameras that take snippets of photos (forget the name) at random this is some way towards that except it is not triggered by movement or changes of scenery just a preset interval of time. But still, you can make fab wildlife shots if you set it up in front of closed flower for example or point it at the clouds. You should get a tripod for this though as you will get better results. And this camcorder camer with the special device you need to screw into the tripod so that was a thumbsup from me. The menu options are not very intuitive but the info on the disc it cam with got me through any difficulties I had.
On return from my holiday comments: the sound quality is awful if driving along and bearable if conversation in a room without background music. The sound quality is so bad the videos I took whilst in the car /noisy environments are going to have to be overdubbed.
The picture quality of the photos (not what it is meant for) is adequate but nothing special. The camcorder shots are good with good stability while panning. Once back home you can make screen shots from the camcorder footage which was really easy to do and the photos looked sharp.
The software it comes with on the disc is not written on the disc - it just says help menu or similar and you have to explore the 'helpdisc' to find there is a program available to install. It will not let you delete files that are on the camcorder; you have to do this manually whils the camcorder is not connected to the PC. The pictures played on my brand new panasonic HD digital TV but not the video. I liked the touch sensitive buttons level of sensitivity but not the button you press to start and stop recording; I often found I started to record again by accident.
